Angelika R. Torrie

European Bluegrass Music Association
Chairperson
Switzerland, Europe

For decades, Angelika has dedicated herself (and her spare time) to furthering the promotion and development of Bluegrass Music. All besides full day job and then as a mother of two. As well as being an IBMA Leadership Alumni, her extensive bluegrass past includes:

Swiss Bluegrass Music Association: Founding member of the SBMA in 1994. Chairperson of the association from 1999 – 2004 and worked tirelessly to raise the standards and the image of Bluegrass music in Switzerland. When she stepped down the association was among the most dynamic and best-supported Bluegrass associations in Europe.

European Bluegrass Network: Along with Paolo Dettwiler and other (and supported by IBMA's International Committee), launched the European Bluegrass Network (EBN) in 1995 in Basel, Switzerland. Her first role was to represent Switzerland in the Network, but she soon found herself typing the first two editions of the European Bluegrass Directory and becoming more involved in the general organization.

ART Promotions: Angelika set up this organization in 1998, and used it as a vehicle to help US bands tour Europe. By now, she has organized and co-organized near to 50 tours of bands from the USA, as well as several European bands. The bands and musicians she helped continue to contact her when touring Europe for both advice and practical support.

European Bluegrass Music Association (EBMA): Co-founder of the EBMA (formed in February 2001). Treasurer and membership administrator of the Association from the beginning and has attended every meeting of the board and every general assembly. She actively takes part in many events and festivals as a representative of EBMA in a role of development, promotion and cohesion.
As Chairperson (2009-2012) she rebuilt the board, managing to retain some board members (Rienk Janssen, Martino Coppo, Dagfinn Pedersen, Petr Brandejs) while reaching out to other parts of Europe for new board members (Chris Keenan, Ireland, and Christopher Howard-Williams, France).
She was instrumental in re-building the bridges in a European bluegrass scene that was divided. Since she became the Chair of EBMA, several key events have happened that have enabled the Association to get stronger and to truly build ties among different countries, regions, musicians and event organizers … She has just been re-appointed Chairperson as of 4 September 2014.
Angelika designed, set up and still runs and maintains the main web presence of European Bluegrass.

The European Bluegrass Summit: Held annually since 2009, this more than anything has brought players from all corners of Europe and from all organizational backgrounds together and helped foster a spirit of cooperation for promoting Bluegrass across the continent. It has led to the production of several key white papers and cross-border initiatives. Twice, IBMA has contributed by sending representatives over to support the event on her request (Dwight Worden and Fred Bartenstein). As the chair of EBMA, Angelika organized three of these summit meetings (2010, 2011, and 2012).

Bluegrass Europe: Senior editor and driving force of this magazine, which is the mouthpiece of the EBMA. In 2010, EBMA redefined its mission and goals, aligned with those of IBMA, and decided to relaunch the magazine in 2011 as a fully-fledged pan-European, high quality Bluegrass journal. With this relaunch, Angelika took over editorship from Paolo Dettwiler.
